Stroke of Magic(VR): Quest2 Puzzle Game

I served as the Art Director and primary 3D Artist on Stroke of Magic, a stylized VR spell-casting game for the Meta Quest 2. My work covered the full visual pipeline: art direction, environment creation, lighting, VFX, and tech art optimization — ensuring the game remained performant and readable on standalone hardware.

Core Responsibilities

• Defined the overall art direction and visual identity of the project
• Modeled, textured, and lit all major environments and props for standalone VR
• Designed the stylized lighting approach and implemented color, contrast, and readability passes
• Created and optimized VFX (spell effects, particles, environment effects) tailored for mobile VR performance
• Authored simple materials and shader variations to support stylized interactions
• Performed performance optimization across assets, materials, and particle systems
• Implemented minor gameplay logic and blueprint scripting to support interactions and visual triggers
• Collaborated closely with the gameplay programmer on feature integration and iteration

We used a texturing technique called Gradient Ramping. This technique allows us to use just one texture sheet and share it across all assets.

We also took measures to make sure there were minimal lighting artifacts by straightening the UV maps and increasing light map resolution.
