Believe the Unbelievable is a collective effort of Vivi Kang (texture and lighting artist), Jessica Teague (VFX artist), Victor Lin (compositor, and environment artist), and me.
This is the final render.
Above is a shot I worked on for "Believe the Unbelievable." I was an environment and lighting artist on this project.
Modeled and textured by me (except for the crate.)
We first came up with a moodboard to visualise the overall mood and colour scheme of the sequence.
After looking at multiple references, I usually like to get myself started by sketching away.
Sketching helps me ideate and visualise ideas better.
I then started blocking out the environment in Blender to quickly get the gist of the overall composition.
I created the first pass of the modular pieces in Maya and put them together in Unreal.
Textured by me. The model was downloaded from a 3D site.
Since this project was not game but a real-time automotive showcase, I decided to use this opportunity to learn more about topology and edge flow.
Looking back at some of my wireframes, I think I would do some things differently now. For instance, I would consolidate some of the edges to reduce the poly count and keep the edges more equally spaced out.
In hindsight, I should have reduced some of poly counts by using normal map for the detail on the screws instead of modeling everything but at the time I was just trying to model every little detail to practice edgeflow.
Again, some edges can be consolidated to lower poly count and not get unwanted highlights. The flow on some of the protruding parts could be improved.
